MCP troubleshooting

Common connection and authentication issues, and how to fix them.

3 min read

Connection fails with 401 Unauthorized

Your token is wrong or expired. Regenerate the token (Admin → MCP → Tokens) and re-enter it in your AI client.

Connection fails with 403 Forbidden

Your token is valid but your user level doesn't have access to the tool being called. Use a token from a user with the required role.

Tools appear but return 'permission denied'

Your token has been scope-restricted. Check the token on Admin → MCP → Tokens to see what scopes are allowed. Adjust if needed.

Widgets don't render in my AI client

Widget rendering requires a recent version of Claude Desktop (v0.7+), ChatGPT Desktop (v1.2+), or Cursor (v0.40+). Older versions fall back to a text summary. Update your client and try again.

Rate-limited frequently

Review the audit log to see which tool is being hammered. If it's legitimate, contact support to raise your tenant's limits.

If nothing above matches your issue, the Copilot in VICIPanel itself can diagnose MCP problems. It has full access to your tenant's MCP logs and can usually pinpoint the issue in seconds.
